Zhang and colleagues win an $11.2 million NIH program project grant

August 22, 2022

Zhang won $11.2 million NIH PPG grant to improve heart attack recovery through the growth of new heart muscle cells.

Grant and Award Announcement

UNIVERSITY F ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The National Institutes of Health has awarded a five-year, $11.2 million program project grant, or PPG, to Jianyi “Jay’’ Zhang, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues to study how to restore the dead tissue from a heart attack, through the growth of new heart muscle cells.

That is a challenge because mammalian hearts show almost no ability to grow new heart muscle cells, called cardiomyocytes, after birth. After a heart attack from a blocked artery, the dead tissue is not repaired with new cardiomyocytes. Instead, it is replaced wit

A Message From the President of ACRE

January 7, 2022

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Today is the last seminar presentation of this year, on December 8, 2021, by Dr. Guo Huang, arising start from UCSF.

The ACRE-CAAC Joint Seminar Series was started on January 6, 2021, by Dr. Joseph Wu from Stanford University.

Over the past year, we have had 22 seminars featuring 28 distinguished speakers and 28
outstanding moderators from the US, China, UK, Canada, Germany, etc. More than 3000
people have attended the seminar series. We have also organized specific panel discussions on “How to grant”, “How to paper”, and “How to job”. These seminar series have provided a much-needed platform for colleagues and friends to get together, discuss science, and foster collaborations.

I want to take the opportunity to thank the joint-seminar committee, Wang Zhao, the chair of the Program and Scientific Committee of ACRE, Rongxue (Rosie) Wu, the chair of the Multi-media and Publication Committee of ACRE, Yiabin, Yin Liya, Hong Chen and Wang Hong from CAAC. I also want to thank our distinguished speakers and moderators.
There is no doubt that ACRE and CAAC cannot make such an achievement without our
audience, including both ACRE-CAAC members and non-members.

The holiday season is approaching. See you all next year! I sincerely wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday and a prosperous new year!

We seek candidates from diverse research backgrounds that are highly collaborative and can integrate with many established research programs in the Aab CVRI and throughout the medical center. Tenure status and rank depend on qualifications. Highly competitive start-up packages will be offered. Successful applicants will have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree/s, will be highly creative, and must have demonstrated exceptional scholarly success in their field. Demonstration of sustained grant or equivalent support is required for appointments at a mid-career or senior rank.

Biomarkers and Sensing for Cardiovascular Diseases

April 24, 2021

Despite decades of efforts, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and related heart failure continue
to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally and have a progressively increasing prevalence. It is increasingly recognized that CVDs must be detected early in order for medical intervention to be effective.

Achieving the goal of early detection of CVD requires specific prognostic biomarkers for early CVD detection and sensing technologies capable of sensitively detecting the biomarkers in various biological samples. Therefore, discovering novel biomarkers and developing unique sensor technology platforms and devices for biomarker detections play a central role in early identification and medical intervention of CVDs and potential heart failure. Dr. Li Qian, Dr. Jiadong Liu, and the team’s discovery in cardiac reprogramming

October 22, 2020
Regulating reprogramming

Reprogramming cardiomyocytes from other cell types could have therapeutic potential for cardiac diseases. Wang et al. studied the induction of cardiomyocytes from murine fibroblasts. They found that autophagy-related 5 (Atg5) regulated autophagy during early cell reprogramming, whereas the autophagic factor Beclin1 inhibited cardiomyocyte induction.

In cell and mouse models, the authors showed that loss of Beclin1 resulted in gene expression changes in reprogramming cells, activation of Wnt signaling, and reduction of scar size after myocardial infarction. This study helps identify the roles of autophagy-dependent and -independent signaling pathways in cardiac fate determination.
